Charlemagne’s Backyard?

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) granted the research proposal submitted in the Free Competition by Prof. dr. F.C.W.J. Theuws (University of Leiden, Faculty of Archaeology) and Prof. dr. M. de Jong (University of Utrecht) entitled "Charlemagne’s Backyard? Rural society in the Netherlands in the Carolingian Age. An archaeological perspective."


20-23 November: Celebration seminar Tatiana Ivleva and Harry van Enckevort

On 20-23 November, a seminar will take place to celebrate the doctoral graduation of Tatiana Ivleva and Harry van Enckevort. For this occasion, Prof. dr. Ian Haynes will give a lecture on Tuesday 20 November entitled: Blood of the Provinces, the auxiliary's experience . Anyone who is interested is invited to attent this lecture. Additionally, MA students and invitees will get a change to attent a workshop called 'Inception of the frontiers: control of river and sea' on Friday 23 November.


New department

A new department for the archaeology of the Roman provinces, the Middle Ages and the Modern Period was created in January 2012 with the appointment of prof. dr. Frans Theuws to the chair of Medieval Archaeology.
