She studied Prehistory of North-western Europe at Leiden University, with specialisations in the application of IT and in museology. After her studies she further specialised in IT and communication. From 1995 till 2008 she was active in Dutch heritage management. First she worked for the Dutch Foundation for Archaeology (now Erfgoed Nederland), where she was the editor of the archaeological magazine ArcheoBRIEF. Then she worked at the State Agency for Archaeology (now Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed) as project manager for public outreach activities. In 2002 she became inspector at the Dutch Inspectorate for Cultural Heritage (Erfgoedinspectie). From 2003 onwards she gave annual guest lectures on Dutch heritage management at the Faculty of Archaeology.

In 2008 she was seconded from the Dutch Ministery of Education, Culture and Science to carry out postdoctoral work on archaeological heritage management and on the development of a Masters specialization in this field. In 2010 she was appointed as lecturer.
