Shumon obtained a MA (summa cum laude) in Prehistoric Archaeology from Cologne University (Germany) in 2013. His thesis concerned an in-depth technological study of Upper Palaeolithic stone artefact assemblages from southern Jordan. His emphatically multidisciplinary research interests cover a range of different but conceptually interconnected topics at the interface of archaeology, anthropology, ecology, cognitive science and philosophy to do with hominin evolution.
Shumon Hussain is currently a PhD researcher with the Human Origins Group. His research is funded by the (German) Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes. In his (epistemological) PhD project he studies divergent styles of lithic analysis in palaeolithic archaeology, in particular French versus Anglo-American approaches, and how they impact the empirical data.
