PhD research

Chiara is working on a linguistic study of the Safaitic inscriptions from Jebel Qurma, a region in northeastern Jordan. The term Safaitic refers to the script used to carve thousands of inscriptions located in the Ḥarrah, a basaltic desert stretching from southern Syria through northern Jordan to northern Saudi Arabia. The language of the inscriptions can be defined as a continuum of Old Arabic dialects.

Chiara is one of the three PhD students in the project:

Landscapes of Survival: Pastoralist Societies, Rock Art and Literacy in Jordan’s Black Desert, c. 1000 BC – 500 AD’.

2013-2014: MA Arabic Studies (cum laude, Leiden University), thesis: 'Selected inscriptions from Wādī Al-Qaṣṣāb: a translation with philological commentary' supervised by Dr. A. Al-Jallad.

2008-2012: BA Languages, History and Cultures of the Arabo-Islamic Countries (cum laude, University of Naples “L’Orientale”), thesis: 'Terminologia dell’aratro nei dialetti neoarabi' supervised by Prof. R. Contini.
