Prof. dr. Willem J.H. Willems 1950-2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear colleague and former dean Prof. dr. Willem J.H. Willems. After a short illness he passed away on Saturday December 13th, around noon.
Prof. Willems was a prominent archaeologist of the North-Western Roman Provinces and world-leader in international heritage policy. He maintained a worldwide network through, amongst others, his membership of numerous international heritage committees and editorial boards.
From 2006 to 2013 he was dean of the Faculty of Archaeology. During this period the Faculty developed into an internationally renowned educational and research institute. He founded the Chair group of Archaeological Heritage Management, which he made into a great success. Prof. Willems was an inspiring teacher and mentor for his many PhD students and postdocs. Since 2013, Willems was one of the four Principal Investigators involved in the prestigious ERC-Synergy project NEXUS 1492. At the same time he was involved in the European NEARCH project and the Heritage Values project.
The death of Willem leaves a great void in the Faculty.
On behalf of the Faculty Board
